awdt's Halloween Quickie #2, the decrepit house
The problem, Harry reflected, with a house that was "a bit of a fixer-upper" was that after you bought it for a song, you had to, you know, fix it up.
"Oh, stop sulking like a wet kneazle and come see inside!" Draco called from the wraparound porch. Harry shook his head. Who could ever have predicted this? Himself, longing for the comforts of a proper house, while Draco Malfoy, the aristocrats' aristocrat (and Harry's lover, but that was another mind-bender altogether) all but cackled with glee at the prospect of renovating their newly-acquired New England estate.
After the war, Harry had wanted to be anywhere but England. He had moved around constantly, driving his real estate agent mad as he called him a year, two years, six months after closing on a place and sighing that it just wasn't right. He'd met Draco again while they were touring the same property, a small cottage with a Wizard space interior out on the wet edge of Wales. Neither had purchased it, in the end, but they had met again in Orkney and County Sligo and even once in a little French town called Aix-en-Provence, when Harry's increasingly-desperate agent had been trying to convince him that learning to speak another language couldn't be that hard. Little by little, they had begun to understand that they were really, both of them, hunting for exactly the same thing.
And here, Harry reflected, watching the cool winter sunshine burnish Draco's hair gold against the snow, watching Draco flicking his wand about and testing color swatches against the peeling outside paint--here maybe, at last, he had found it.
"Haaaaarry!" Draco's call bordered on whinging and was losing territory to it fast. "Hurry up! The heat's on and the bedroom's ready and it was an eight hour flight and I'm horny--"
Harry threw back his head, and laughed, and followed Draco inside. He had a feeling they'd be staying here for a very, very long time.
