awdt 's Christmas Quickies. Prompt: Present lists.
A Candlelit Evening
Dobby sat on the floor of the Hogwarts kitchens, carefully adding another name to his Christmas present list. To one side of him sat a small pyramid of yarn balls, acid greens and lemon yellows and dragonsbreath reds that made his large, round eyes gleam with excitement. To the other was the crumpled pattern for knitting socks that Dinky had given him, along with... a new pattern. Yes, Harry Potter, kind Harry Potter, wonderful Harry Potter would only be getting one pair of socks from Dobby this year.
Because Dobby's Christmas list had doubled.
The thought of it gave Dobby a fluttery feeling in his stomach, a little happy and a little nervous. He wondered at his own daring, adding that second name in the painstakingly beautiful handwriting that all Malfoy House Elves had been expected to achieve:Master Draco Malfoy.
Adding that "Master" had been force of habit, and Dobby had scratched it out in frustration as soon as he noticed what he had done. He was a free elf now, and although it was what he had always wanted, sometimes he still found himself struggling with the idea of it.
Harry Potter, kind Harry Potter, helped with that, though. Dobby remembered the day Harry Potter had come down to the kitchens with Mast-- with Draco Malfoy, holding the other boy's hand. Draco had been shaking, and Harry Potter had sat him down at one of the human-sized tables and quietly asked Dobby for two mugs of cocoa, please, and one with a dollop of rum if he had. Dobby had eagerly complied, as he always did for Harry Potter. When he had come back, Harry Potter had had his arm around Draco's shoulders and his lips pressed against Draco's shining hair, and was rocking him gently back and forth, murmuring quietly about "it's all right" and "I'm so sorry" and something about "the Kiss."
Dobby hadn't quite understood what was going on -- but there were some things House Elves did understand, and one of those things was when someone had got to be added to a Christmas list. Even if that list didn't usually belong to a House Elf's own self.
Dobby just hoped that...Master Draco liked yellow and red hats with ear flaps.
