Pimping the Awesomeness
Feb. 8th, 2009 09:47 amIn case any of y'all haven't heard yet,
faithwood (who is already demonstratedly brilliant in these matters) has created an incredible resource site specifically for fanfic writers.
A (Beginner's) Guide to Fanfiction
In her own words: "This is primarily a writers' resource site; something I would have loved to stumble on when I first came to fandom. Other than that, my goal is to inspire and encourage people to write, and point them to resources that can help them write better."
The site is organized into three main sections: SPaG and the like, which applies to pretty much all narrative writing; issues semi-specific to fanfiction, but which can be generalized to most narrative writing, with helpful links included; and a part focused on issues unique to writers on LJ, such as basic coding & technicalities of this site. The whole thing is chock full of links to resources, Faith's wonderful sense of humor, and above all just thoughts and advice from one of the best and most self-aware writers in fandom today. A couple choice quotes:
"Read your smutty sentence. If you can make fun of it, rewrite it: His erection returned with a vengeance. It took out a tiny sword and said, "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
"Awkwardness and mistakes are wonderful things. Let your characters make silly mistakes. Let them forget to take their pants off and trip, let them hit their toes on the bed's leg, let them miss their intended target and kiss and touch parts they really didn't plan on touching. Let them be confused."
Well? What are you still standing here for? GO SEE FOR YOURSELF! *makes shooing motions*
